in early april 2007 i returned from six months in africa, primarily uganda and rwanda. i went to photograph, and experience a continent i knew nothing about. I came back having had a powerful and unforgettable experience i never wanted to leave. this is a partial selection of portraits from 5 of the 7 countries i visited, providing a small glimpse into the diversity and character of the people.

photo story:rwanda's disabled community

for 4 weeks in early 2007 i documented the work of a non-profit organization called Inkuru Nziza in the gikondo region of kigali. the organization is one of over 90 community-based rehabilitation (CBR) organizations around the world that focus on rehabilitating disabled individuals and finding ways to integrate them into their communities.

photo story: hiv positive in uganda
although the prevalence of new infections of HIV/AIDS in uganda is stable at 6% annually, the number of people living longer with the virus is growing steadily. these photos highlight the work of Reach Out, an NGO in the Mbuya district of Kampala, Uganda dedicated to holistic care of people living with HIV/AIDS.
