From Thailand to Texas, amateur to academic, beautiful to banal and beyond the monumental quantity and variety of "Snap to Grid" becomes an aesthetic experience where each individual piece adds to an agglomerative effect that has a life of its own."

fire on front street - buskerfest in toronto

here are four of my favorite photos from buskerfest 2007 in toronto on front street. lots of fire and lots of fun. they say it's the last big festival of the summer in toronto, and what with labour day this weekend, i guess they are right (i don't know who "they" are, but i read it somewhere).

it's a fun festival, the kids reactions are precious and there are some pretty incredible tricks. unfortunately i saw some of the acts two or three times (i went two days in a row) and it's just not the same that way, i mean, it's the SAME thing. well hold on, maybe that's better for photos because you know what's coming, but actually, now that i think of it, all these photos were done on the first and only time i saw the act, so maybe it's not that much better for photography. anyway...

click on the photos to seem them bigger, and trust me, they are much bigger better.

harry potter in uxbridge, ontario
these photos were taken in Uxbridge Onatrio (population: 20,000) on the evening of July 20th, 2007 in celebration and anticipation of the release of the seventh and final harry potter book.
prof trelawney reading tea-leaves
the line for pre-ordered books stretched down the block
i had been planning to go to bay and bloor in toronto to see the large street party planned outside indigo bookstore, but at around 6:15 that night i heard a live cbc radio interview with shelley macbeth the owner of uxbridge's blue heron bookstore (pictured on the right with the first books at 12:01 AM) talking about festivities planned in her town. i immediately changed direction and drove north to uxbridge.

what a glorious experience, the entire town was converted into a mini-hogwarts. activities included a 45-minute train ride on the hogwarts express between uxbridge and stouffville (with moaning myrtle and dementors roaming the train), a wand making shop, divination with prof. trelawney (pictured above), harry potter look-alike contest, trivia games and fully costumed characters roaming the streets (including the city mayor dressed up as a magical dumbledore).

click on the images above to view a gallery of images, only a small glimpse of all there was to see. i wish i could have captured so much more or been everywhere at the same time... i had forgotten my broom :(

three questions - an introduction
this is an introduction to what i hope will be a life-long project. i wish i had started it years ago, but i hope to continue to add to it until the day i die.

it's simple really, for the rest of my life there will be occasions after taking someones picture i will ask them three questions:

1. What makes you happy?

2. What advice do you have for people around the world?

3. If you could ask one question to everyone in the world, what would it be?

the key is, i will ask these same three questions each and every time.

i got the idea before i left for africa. i was looking for a way to record and compare joy and insight from people all over the world. i wanted the questions to be positive and thought provoking allowing people to pass on knowledge while at the same time introduce new dialog.

the project is just beginning but thus far i've been impressed with so many of the answers and i'm excited about the cross-cultural collection of faces and ideas. i hope the project will grow to reveal more and more about each other and ourselves.

i'll try and update this site as often as possible, whenever i'm back from traveling or simply just going to the store.

toronto sports fans in uganda
you can find t-shirts supporting just about every north american professional or collegiate sports team in africa, but it's a surreal experience when you see someone wearing peraphernalia supporting YOUR home-town team. within a couple weeks i ran into these three young men, all more then willing to model their shirts, supporting three of toronto's pro-teams. they were not the only three, there were many other Blue Jays, Raptors and Leafs supporters. i didn't find anything Argos, that would have really blown me away.

on a somewhat related note, rural rwanda has to have the largest concentration of LA Kings backpacks in the world. no joke, probably 1 in 3 people has one. if you're from LA, and you like the Kings, you are going to love Rwanda.

happy canada day!
hope everyone had a great long-weekend.

this photo was taken at toronto ribfest at centennial park in etobicoke this past sunday (july 1rst!).

i played with a variety of shutter speeds during the fireworks, but this one was taken at a full two seconds. i don't think the timing could have been better, though i probably should have gone with a smaller aperture. i took over 120 photos of the fireworks but i like about four of them - they are not an easy thing to photograph.

first blog
the website is finally done! it's been a long journey and i'm excited to have it finished for you to see. i'm looking forward to improving it already. send comments or suggestions to info(at)josephmichael.ca

huge thanks to Craig Appl for the inspiration and help every step of the way. Craig works for Reach Out in Uganda and even with the slowest internet connection possible, he was always there to help. thanks Craig!

this blog is going to be a place for me to post new images and projects i'm working on, share links and give updates about my work and inspiration.

hopefully sometime next month i'll have my first posts here of a life-long project i began in africa called, for the moment, "three questions."

until then, have a look around and enjoy the site. thanks again for coming to visit!
